City of Austin residential permitting
In 2016 I left my job at Under Armour Connected Fitness to join the first cohort of City of Austin Design, Innovation & Technology Fellows. This brand new program was modeled after the work and process used at 18F and the USDS.
Working in small teams comprised of a project manager, design research, service design, and engineering, we were tasked with partnering with Development Services (DSD) to rebuild their residential permitting process.
Anyone who has ever applied for a permit in their city knows what a hassle this can be. As a team, we brought our expertise in tech and conducted many hours of user research with residents, contractors, home builders, and DSD staff.
This year-long design and research project culminated in an easy-to-use permitting resource that helps residents understand the residential permitting process, and guides them.
My role as PM was to keep the team on track, manage funds, burndown, act as an account manager, participate in all research and design activities, presentations, and plan activities using a Kanban framework.
